How Progressive are You?
Take the quiz here.
Mike LaRoche sent the link, and I was fortunate enough to discover that I am extremely conservative! How shocking, all this time I thought I was a socialist.
My pro-life, national security and small government views likely prevented me from scoring higher. With a score of 41 out of 400, I take that as a positive failing grade. Should you receive a score of four hundred, you are a homeless intellectual, an Obama voter, or my widely despised, unfortunate looking and overweight relative with eyelash extensions.

A 74! I’m a stinking liberal! waaaaa.
March 13th, 2009 at 10:42 am
I scored a 139. Long live Harry Truman! You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog.
Harry S. Truman
Dear Moxie, now you know where my heart lies.
March 13th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Crap! I was 102, I’m unworthy to read this blog
March 13th, 2009 at 11:13 am
I scored a 90. Compared to Moxie and Robert, I’m practically another Cindy Sheehan!
If a 90 makes me “Extremely Conservative”, what do they call a 41… Unabomber? A Bitter Clinger?
Or do they simply ask you to wait for 30 seconds while they triangulate your position and send in the hit squad?
March 13th, 2009 at 11:52 am
I’m a 174, conservative. It’s their fault for letting mentally unstable for participating. I guess I’m more moderate than you, Mox. Which makes sense…though my brothers do call me the Unabomber?
March 13th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I got a 44, and the funny thing is I thought I was being liberal on my choices, and I think I screwed up the first two answers.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Wow, the average score is 209, but “moderates” score a 217.
Interesting definition of “moderate”.
I’m Extremely Conservative at 188. I’m guessing they are fudging a bit.
Well, not guessing.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
81. I wasn’t thrilled with how many of the questions were phrased where the answer was a choice between having a knife stuck in my gut or having a knife stuck in my gut and twisted.
I’m also of the opinion that if the GOP becomes defined by abortion and gay issues, it’s doomed. It needs to veer strongly libertarian and make moral, not legislative, arguments. Government should get out of the education and the marriage businesses. Let relationships become contracts. Then employers should learn to grant X shares of health benefits to an employee and the employee should divide that among spouse, children, siblings, whatever.
Of course, I think anything the government could to transition health benefits AWAY from employers will help unshackle those productive workers who happen to acquire diabetes or some other disease that makes them slaves to their current employer because they can’t take their benefits with them to a better-paying employer whose health plan excludes pre-existing conditions.
Imagine if people at 20 got health insurance plans they could carry with them in perpetuity.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Well, I was almost disappointed to see my 127. I should have expected that with pro-choice (not pro-abortion) views and my tolerance of gays. Being limited government though, was a consist theme. Funny, they still called me “Very Conservative”.
I agree Aaron. I found many of the questions conflicting, but chose to go with, “If I disagree with part of it, then I disagree with all of it” path.

a 142, it must be due to the fact that I pay union dues. Oh, yes. I did read an article in the New York Times once it was an accident(really) I was just looking for the crossword puzzle.
March 13th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Moxie managed to beat my score of 43 out of 400, and I’m a hard-line red state conservative. I demand a recount!
By the way Mox, your relative should click on this link to see my own video rant.
March 13th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
I only managed a 47. The Fuhrer must be spinning in his grave.
Whoops, I mean “spinning in that cardboard banker’s box where the Russians put the charred bones that used to be him.”
March 13th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Mike, you Yankovic’d my relative! Well played!
Steve, I thought for certain you’d beat my score.
N, Better get started on that St. N of Crawford routine.
Matthew, I’ve accidentally read the NYT myself, shit happens. Maybe you need some more PJ O’Rourke!
March 13th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
I was saddened that I got a 63, they still cal it extremly conservative. I have the feeling they think everything below the 209.5 average is conservative.
March 13th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
I am ashamed, 77.
In my defense I’d like to mention that I scored my opinion on whether or not homosexuality should be accepted in society and is unnatural at a 5….. because I believe it is unnatural but should nonetheless be accepted by society.
It feels like a very Atheistic inner conflict, my point of view isn’t represented. That must happen to professional Atheists all the time.
I don’t think I’d make a good one because I get all wrapped up in stuff like whether “Atheist” is supposed to be capitalized.
I’d like to float the idea of flooding California’s political system with Youtube based campaigns for Governor and State Senate seats etc. Lets get Democratic on their asses.
Sorry I overshared.
March 14th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I got a 41/400 too! This makes me extremely conservative!

March 14th, 2009 at 2:27 am
155 even thought I 0′d out the religious and pro-life questions. Interesting.
March 14th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
108, I’m such a poseur, but at least I’m still “very conservative” by their measure. I think the way the statements were phrased contributed a lot though. Sucker bets on too many of them.
March 14th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
79/400. Pretty dubious survey question construction in many cases, IMNSHO. The groups on their “composite index” are non-orthogonal, so the whole “new progressive map” concept is pretty useless…unless you’re pushing an agenda, of course.
March 15th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I took the thing twice having second thought about a few questions but ended up with the same score (94).
The two questions that were impossible to answer were the questions about the value of government investment in infrastructure (no disambiguation about whether we are talking about local, state, or federal government), and lumping in education with building of roads. The other question was about value of immigrants (no clarification about illegals versus legal).
I think the Feds should completely abandon any responsibility regarding education. This belongs first and foremost, a parent’s responsibility, with some assistance from the local government. Even at the state level things get crazy. Things like history books and curriculum in some states are mandate at the state government level which is why every kid knows Rosa Parks but is clueless about our Founding Fathers.
Legal immigration still continues to be an enormous benefit.
I know working in a high tech company with kids who are twenty years younger and mostly Asian. They bring brains, great energy and a fabulous work ethic which is infectious.
March 15th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
It doesn’t matter how high you score. All that matters is how much self-esteem you have.
March 15th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
You think they would let me take the test again, un-timed? I don’t think the questions relate well to my demographic. It’s just not fair. Besides, all the teachers just taught to the test and I didn’t learn anything, that’s why I did bad on the test. And why wasn’t it in Spanish? I’m sure if I played football I’d get a better score.
March 15th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Here’s another quiz y’all might like: What Breed of Conservative Are You?
My result:
You are an Anti-government Gunslinger, also known as a libertarian conservative. You believe in smaller government, states’ rights, gun rights, and that, as Reagan once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”
March 15th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
I scored 116/400 (Very Conservative), which I guess makes me a moderate…
March 16th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
56. Sweet. I was disappointed at first, but you all have made me feel better with your ridiculous 100’s.
March 16th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Your Conservative Breed: Flag-Waving Everyman
You are a Faith-Based Fighter, also known as a religious conservative. You believe in Judeo-Christian values, restoring God’s rightful place in the public square, and in showing all the unwashed and unsaved liberal sinners the path to salvation, or at least to the GOP.
You are a Flag-Waving Everyman, also known as a patriot. You believe in freedom, apple pie, rooting for America at all times, and that God gave us a two-day weekend so we could enjoy football and NASCAR.
March 17th, 2009 at 2:36 am
I scored a 68 (I’m not worthy, Moxie!), and asa Free MArketer on the other one, Mike.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Your Conservative Breed: Anti-government Gunslinger
Funny survey, but some of the questions forced me to settle for the best answer since the right answer was not there.
March 17th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Yippeee! I’m a conservative. I scored a 30
March 17th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
I scored a 71, which meant that I scored extremely conservative. There were a few questions that I dithered over because I didn’t like the either/or nature of them, but what are you gonna do?
March 18th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
64/400. Must be because I don’t want to see homosexuals burned at the stake.
I also got nuked by a coouple of the question formats: e.g. Free markets always do better than the .gov at creating jobs. Not always true. Think only of the Depts. of Interior and Energy — those two bastards alone have created thousands of jobs, albeit ones which screw us over.
March 18th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Anyway: at least the answer wasn’t “Aha! you’re a LIBERTARIAN!!!” which is what 90% of Internet quizzes end up with.
March 18th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
64. Kinda disappointing, but I too thought the questions were too broadly phrased in a number of cases. As to the ‘other groups’ why show that when they’re not collecting that info from the people who take the survey? That invalidates their demographics IMV. Of course, as suggested above, they may be pushing some sort of agenda …
March 18th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Hi Kim, I’ve missed you. 64 is a respectable score!
MartiniPundit, the site certainly has an agenda. I also didn’t like that people taking the quiz on the web weren’t added to the compare feature. Gosh, that might skew their results and make them more accurate!
March 20th, 2009 at 4:07 am
152 - I’m a small as possible federal government guy but as a word guy was unhappy how many of the questions were phrased so just threw down a 5 for half of them. Funny because I’m generally more sympathetic to “Huckabee-esque (Hurl! unto him)” Christian traditions than Mox
Not that I go to church often… but ya know, I admire my parents and they don’t force their views on anyone.
March 20th, 2009 at 4:08 am
What I mean to imply is I have warmth in my heart for many Christian traditions, but please don’t associate Christianity with Gomer Huckabee. There is no correlation in my mind.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:50 am
I agree with you on the phrasing of the questions. I threw down a few 5’s myself.
And my folks are also religious. While I don’t “get” it, I love and admire them. You bet. That’s the tough part about being godless, for me anyway…
March 25th, 2009 at 11:09 am
My score was 95. What a silly quiz.
