Being Ann Althouse

Althouse is on fire. Professor Althouse is calling people out on the media’s imaginary third person quipping, and she’s speaking in intelligent tongues, as usual.

  1. Ann Althouse nails it:

Ha ha ha. I get it. What a hilarious idea for political humor! You pick a religion that the candidate has some past relationship to, then you pick some aspect of it that seems ridiculous to a cloddish nonbeliever, then you attribute that trait to the candidate.

The media loves to do that to Republican candidates. They did so with Ronald Reagan (Disciples of Christ) and George W. Bush (Methodist). Both the Disciples of Christ and the Methodists are mainline Protestant denominations with millions of members, but reporters (or other antagonists) find the most extreme believers within such sects, repeat their views, and then breathlessly declare that the Republican candidates in question must be extremists too!

    Ridiculous.

One could easily do the same with my religious affiliation (Catholic).

Fortunately, the election will turn on more substantive issues, like doing right by our troops in the field.

  2. Mike, Glad you liked that post. I hope I’ll be exactly like Ann Althouse when I am her age in a few months.

Okay, it will be a year and change, but still…lots of work to do in the meanwhile.

Back to the political humor, double standard. Thinking of the horrendous stuff that has been said about Governor Palin’s children, the minors — how fast would I be murdered if I saw that Obama youth/Kim Jong Il music video and said — “Now I understand why liberals think abortion is a good idea”?

  3. I want a different MOD. for tonight!!!…………..Nino

  4. ” Okay, it will be a year and change, but still…lots of work to do in the meanwhile. ”

    You mean, Ann is 38?! No way. She looks… er… 29. ;)

btw, today is _my_ b-day. Happy Bentley-day to me.

  5. Nino, I think the word is out, so hopefully Ifill will behave, knowing she is under a microscope. Was saying in another thread, I wish we could have Greta moderate. She’s been able to keep her politics out of the newsroom and deserves some praise and cool gigs.

    Condo,
I’m not near 38, nor is Ann. And happy birthday, hope your 67th year is the best one yet! May you live long enough to crap your pants, Condo.

  6. “I’m not near 38, nor is Ann.”

Huh… Your Myspace page says your 36. But then you could be basing your age by/on a different calendar year (kinda like Genesis where the Universe was created in 7 days/13.73 billion years.)

So…. what calendar year are you basing it off of, hmmmmm???? :)

  7. “May you live long enough to crap your pants, Condo.”

… and that may not take long if Obama gets elected.

  8. Thanks for the link.
I too wonder at the enormous amount of hate and contempt directed at Palin. I am biased, but I think it’s the commitment to the empty shirt combined with the challenge she presents to the only thing he has, that is, media attention (and media favor), because he sure doesn’t have anything else.
